Rotorua Highlights: Wai-O-Tapu, Lunch & 5 Experience Choices

About This Experience

One day from Auckland. One must-see geothermal wonder. Five ways to spend your afternoon.

Travel from Auckland to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and explore its surreal volcanic landscapes before enjoying an included lunch. Then choose one of five pre-arranged Rotorua experiences for your afternoon: walk among the treetops on the Redwoods Treewalk, relax at Polynesian Spa, soak at Secret Spot Hot Tubs, discover Māori culture and geothermal wonders at Te Puia, or take on the forest canopy with a zipline adventure. With the day organised for you, all you have to decide is which Rotorua experience is right for you.

While the destinations you will be visiting are spectacular, we at Cheeky Kiwi Travel believe it is our small groups, our guides, the journey and the little details that set our tours well apart.

What to Bring

  • Closed walking shoes — the loop trails are boardwalk and packed gravel, with sulphur-slick patches after rain

  • Closed shoes and something you can move in if you choose the Treewalk or zipline

Frequently Asked Questions

Which afternoon experience should I choose?

Pick the Treewalk or zipline for something active, Polynesian Spa or Secret Spot Hot Tubs to recover from the drive, or Te Puia if you want Maori culture and a second geothermal valley on the same day. You select it when you book, not on the day.

Is lunch really included?

Yes — lunch is in the fare, along with bottled water and snacks on the bus. The tour excludes on-board restrooms, so the stops are planned around that.

How long is the day?

About 12 hours from Auckland. Pickup is from selected CBD locations only, so check whether your hotel is on the list before you book.

Could the tour be cancelled?

Minimum numbers apply. If too few people book, the operator may cancel after confirmation and will offer you an alternative date or a full refund.

Is it suitable for wheelchair users?

No. The operator advises against it for travellers with severe mobility difficulties or wheelchair users, because of uneven surfaces and a moderate amount of walking. The park's own admission ticket is the more accessible route in.
