Closed walking shoes — the loop trails are boardwalk and packed gravel, with sulphur-slick patches after rain
A rain jacket and a warm layer: the tours run in all weather, and the open sinter flats catch the wind
Drinking water — there is no tap water on the trails, only at the visitor centre
Sun protection; the sinter flats are open and reflective, and New Zealand's UV is fierce in summer
Money for lunch — the stop at the Waimangu cafe around midday is at your own expense

Is lunch included?

No. There is a 30-minute stop at the Waimangu Cafe around 12 PM, but food and drinks are at your own cost. Bring something with you if you would rather not queue.

What time does the pickup happen?

Between roughly 8:00 and 8:30 AM from your Rotorua accommodation. If you are meeting rather than being collected, wait outside the Rydges hotel entrance at 8:30 AM — there is free parking around the back.

Will I see the Lady Knox Geyser erupt?

Yes — the itinerary is built around the 10:15 AM eruption, which is why the pickup is so early. It is the same daily eruption every Wai-O-Tapu visitor sees.

Does it pick up from cruise ports?

No. The operator does not collect from any New Zealand port on its shared tours. If you are arriving by ship at Tauranga, look at the shore excursions on this site instead.

How fit do I need to be?

Moderate fitness is enough — two guided walks of about an hour each on formed paths. The operator advises against it for travellers with heart complaints or other serious medical conditions, and it runs in all weather.
