Wai-O-Tapu vs Hell's Gate
Wai-O-Tapu is the colour and the sightseeing; Hell's Gate adds a geothermal walk with mud baths and sulphur pools you can get into. How they compare, and how to do both in one day.
Wai-O-Tapu is mainly about looking at an extraordinary geothermal landscape. Hell’s Gate adds a mud-and-sulphur spa you can get into, so your visit becomes hands-on.
Pick by what you want from the afternoon: photos of colourful pools, or a soak. If you have a full day in Rotorua, you can do both.

Quick answer
Go to Wai-O-Tapu for colour and sightseeing, and to Hell’s Gate for a geothermal walk plus a mud and spa session.
Choose Wai-O-Tapu for
You get the Champagne Pool, vivid mineral colour, the Lady Knox Geyser, self-guided photography and classic geothermal sightseeing. A Wai-O-Tapu admission ticket starts from US$29 (4.4/5 from 550 reviews); see our ticket and price guide for what it covers.
Choose Hell’s Gate for
An active geothermal walk combined with purpose-built mud baths and sulphur pools. Hell’s Gate is the stronger choice if bathing is on your Rotorua wish list. The Hell’s Gate geothermal walk takes 1 to 2 hours, guided or self-guided, and the Hell’s Gate mud bath and sulphur spa is a separate ticket. The bathing listing sets different minimum ages for the mud bath and the sulphur spa, so check them for everyone in your group, and bring swimwear.
Mud comparison
Wai-O-Tapu’s separate Mud Pool is for viewing only. At Hell’s Gate the spa lets you cover yourself in geothermal mud and soak in sulphur water in purpose-built pools.
Photography versus relaxation
Wai-O-Tapu is the better park for landscape photography. Hell’s Gate gives you a more active and relaxing second half of the visit, with the walk first and the soak after it.
Can you do both?
Yes. Wai-O-Tapu in the morning and Hell’s Gate in the afternoon make a full geothermal day with little overlap. The two parks sit on opposite sides of Rotorua: Wai-O-Tapu 31 km south on the road to Taupō, Hell’s Gate east of the city off State Highway 30, where the turnoff comes about 5 minutes past the airport. Hell’s Gate opens from 10 AM to 9 PM, with last entry for the geothermal walk at 5:30 PM and for the mud bath and spas at 7:30 PM, so a 3 PM finish at Wai-O-Tapu leaves plenty of time.
Without a car, the small-group morning tour from Rotorua (US$140, 4.8/5 from 390 reviews) covers Wai-O-Tapu and Waimangu and has you back in Rotorua around 1 PM, which leaves the afternoon free for Hell’s Gate. Final thoughts
Wai-O-Tapu works best when you plan the day around what you want to experience, instead of trying to collect every Rotorua attraction at once. Give the geothermal landscape enough time, keep fixed times such as Lady Knox in mind, and leave a buffer for driving and weather. For Te Puia and Waimangu as alternatives, see Wai-O-Tapu vs Te Puia vs Waimangu.
