Wai-O-Tapu Tickets, Prices & Booking Guide: What Admission Includes

Wai-O-Tapu admission costs NZ$49 for adults and covers the thermal park and the 10:15 AM Lady Knox Geyser. Child and family prices, the free Mud Pool, and tickets vs tours.

Updated October 2026

A Wai-O-Tapu ticket covers the main geothermal park and the 10:15 AM Lady Knox Geyser presentation: the park sells them as one admission. An adult ticket costs NZ$49 and a child’s NZ$18. Shuttle and tour products may add transport, a guide and other attractions. Prices can change, so treat the live checkout as the final word. For whether the ticket is worth it for your trip, see Is Wai-O-Tapu worth it?

If you are driving, the park’s own entry ticket below is all you need. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland sells it on Viator too, where prices show in US dollars, from US$29 per person.

Quick answer

Independent travellers with a car usually only need admission; car-free visitors should compare shuttle and entry packages. These are the park’s own prices, checked on its booking page in October 2026.

TicketWho it coversPrice
AdultAges 16 and overNZ$49
ChildAges 5 to 15NZ$18
InfantAges 0 to 4Free
Family of 42 adults and 2 childrenNZ$120
Family of 52 adults and 3 childrenNZ$120

Booking on the park’s own website adds a booking fee of about 5%, so the online checkout showed NZ$51.56 for an adult, NZ$18.94 for a child and NZ$126.26 for either family ticket.

What admission is for

The paid main park contains Champagne Pool, the coloured geothermal features, the craters and the self-guided tracks. The Lady Knox Geyser has its own site and car park, a short drive from the Visitor Centre, but its 10:15 AM presentation is part of the same admission: the park’s ticket is called Thermal Park & Lady Knox Geyser Admission. With that ticket you can go straight to the geyser first, then drive on to the park and explore at your own pace.

The Mud Pool is different. It is a free roadside stop near the park turn-off and needs no ticket. Third-party packages do not always include every part, so confirm inclusions when you buy one: some shuttles sell a transport-only fare beside an entry-inclusive one.

Buy online or onsite?

Tickets can be bought online or at the Visitor Centre. Booking ahead is useful in peak periods, for families, or when your itinerary gives you only one available day.

Online, you choose a date when you book. The park’s own website charges the booking fee shown above. The Wai-O-Tapu admission on Viator is sold by the park itself, rated 4.4 out of 5 from more than 540 reviews, and shows its price in US dollars, so compare the two at your own exchange rate on the day. Whichever you choose, last admission at the park is 3 PM.

Family pricing

Family products can save money compared with buying individual adult and child admissions. Always compare the live family rate before assuming separate tickets are cheaper.

At the prices in the table, two adults and two children pay NZ$134 on separate tickets and NZ$120 on the family ticket, a saving of NZ$14. With three children, separate tickets come to NZ$152 against the same NZ$120 family price, a saving of NZ$32. Check our one-day Rotorua itinerary if you are fitting the park into a family day with Te Puia.

Tours versus tickets

A higher-priced tour may include shuttle transport, guide commentary, hotel pickup or extra attractions. Compare like with like, never a standalone entrance ticket against a full-day excursion.

From Rotorua, the Wai-O-Tapu shuttle run by a local Māori whānau starts at US$79, picks you up from your accommodation, starts at the Mud Pool and Lady Knox, and includes park entry on its combo fare. It has only 8 reviews so far, all 5 stars. The half-day Wai-O-Tapu tour from Rotorua starts at US$103 with all fees included, leaving from the i-SITE on Fenton Street and rated 4.4 from 14 reviews. For US$140, the small-group Waimangu and Wai-O-Tapu morning tour adds hotel pickup, guided walks and a second thermal valley, and has you back by about 1 PM. Our tour or self-drive guide works out the cost for a whole group, and which Wai-O-Tapu tour is right for you compares every option.

Cashless site

Wai-O-Tapu currently operates cashless, so bring a major credit card or an EFTPOS card.

Practical planning essentials

  • Wai-O-Tapu is about 31 km from Rotorua, roughly a 27-minute drive in normal conditions.
  • Wai-O-Tapu currently operates 8:30 AM–4:30 PM, with final admission at 3 PM. Check the official site before travel because operating details can change.
  • Lady Knox Geyser is presented at 10:15 AM daily; Wai-O-Tapu recommends arriving by 9:45 AM if you want to see it.
  • The main geothermal park is self-guided, with three connected walking-track options that let visitors shorten or extend the route.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring layers, rain protection, water, sunscreen and a charged phone or camera.
  • There are no toilets inside the main geothermal park or at Lady Knox; use the Visitor Centre facilities first.

Final thoughts

Wai-O-Tapu works best when you choose the itinerary by what you actually want to experience, instead of trying to collect every Rotorua attraction in one day. Give the geothermal landscape enough time, keep fixed timings such as Lady Knox in mind, and leave a realistic buffer for driving and weather. Our Lady Knox Geyser guide sets out the geyser morning step by step.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Wai-O-Tapu cost?

The park’s own prices are NZ$49 for an adult (16 and over) and NZ$18 for a child aged 5 to 15, with under-5s free. Booking on the park’s website adds a booking fee of about 5%. On Viator, the same admission shows in US dollars, from US$29.

Is the Lady Knox Geyser included in the Wai-O-Tapu ticket?

Yes. The park sells one Thermal Park & Lady Knox Geyser admission, so the 10:15 AM presentation is included even though the geyser has its own site and car park.

Is the Mud Pool included?

It does not need to be. The Mud Pool is a free roadside stop near the park turn-off, separate from both the paid park and the Lady Knox site.

Is there a Wai-O-Tapu family pass?

Yes. Two family tickets cost NZ$120 each: one for 2 adults and 2 children, and one for 2 adults and 3 children. That saves NZ$14 or NZ$32 against separate tickets.

Can you buy Wai-O-Tapu tickets at the gate?

Yes, at the Visitor Centre, by card only, since the site is cashless. Last admission is at 3 PM. Booking online fixes your date in advance, which helps in busy periods.
